General Practice Residency Program Mission
Statement
The mission of St. Charles Dental Services Department is to provide
compassionate care for all patients including those with physical
and developmental disabilities by providing preventative and restorative
dental care.
With the goal of fostering ongoing clinical excellence in dentistry,
the department supports a Dental General Practice Residency Program.
All members of the team including dentists, hygienists and dental
assistants, educate patients and caregivers on proper dental hygiene
and self care so that people of all ages can have healthy mouths
and happy smiles.
The General Practice Residency Program
The General Practice Residency Program at St. Charles is an educational
program designed to provide clinical, didactic and hospital experience
at the post-doctoral level. The program prepares residents in diagnosing
and providing dental care in the context of each patient’s
total health care needs.
Located on the first floor of the hospital, the Clinic has seven
operatories serving a general population from the local community.
Patients served include people with disabilities who account for
more than 40% of total patient volume.
Program Information
- Program year is July 1st through June 30th of the following
year
- Three residents will be accepted annually
- Salary is $44,100 annually
- Benefit time includes 15 days off and 8 hospital holidays
- Medical and dental insurance is available
- Malpractice insurance is provided
- Clinic Hours: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
- Work hours extend beyond clinic hours to include rounds, inpatient
consults, emergencies, surgeries, lectures, etc.
Resident Responsibilities
- Treat patients in clinics
- Perform pre-operative H&Ps/assessments
- Assist in surgical cases, write orders, conduct daily rounds
on inpatients and ambulatory surgery patients
- Attend all required lectures, including those assigned by Director
(i.e. local study groups)
- Provide on-call coverage to the Emergency Department
- Represent the program at student events (i.e. Great NY GPR
Fair)
- Attend and pass ACLS course
- Prepare and present cases and journal articles monthly
Goals & Objectives
The goal of the General Practice Residency Program is to prepare
general dentists to effectively provide total oral health care to
patients in both ambulatory and non-ambulatory settings, with an
understanding of the relationship between oral health and systematic
health.
The objectives of our advanced education program in general
practice are as follows:
- To refine and advance knowledge and clinical skills in the
practice of dentistry.
- To provide preventative and restorative dental care to patients
in the community with emphasis on services for individuals with
physical and developmental disabilities.
- To work with patients in a manner that is professional, builds
rapport and confidence, respects patients’ rights and dignity,
puts patients’ interest first and maximizes patients’
satisfaction with dental care.
- To participate in community outreach programs to improve access
to oral health care and to reduce the incidence of oral disease.
- To develop in residents the ability to function in the hospital
setting as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team.
- To provide a broad understanding of the inner-relationship of
dental and medical care to the physical, social and emotional
needs of the patients.
- To develop in residents a sense of responsibility to the dental
community in which he/she practices as evidenced in their participation
in professional associates, civic associates, voluntary community
screening activities and teaching programs.
