Amputee Rehabilitation
St. Charles offers a comprehensive rehabilitation program for patients who have had a limb amputated. The program is designed to provide education and training so that individuals with an amputation may continue to function independently before and after prosthetic introduction. A team approach is utilized to provide each patient with compassionate, individualized care that meets their specific needs.
Medical services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social services and prosthetic consultation are provided by St. Charles's team of experts. The rehabilitation process includes the following:
- Comprehensive mobility instruction
- Functional living practice (i.e. helping patients make necessary adjustments to their daily living routines)
- Pre-prosthetic exercises and mobility training
- Custom-fitting and ongoing assessment and adjustment of prosthetic devices
- Post-surgical care
- Wound healing
- Peer counseling
- Community reintegration
Pre-Prosthetic Program
- Healing of the involved limb
- Improved range of motion and endurance
- Reduce swelling to prepare limb for prosthetic fit
- Improves strength, endurance, and range of motion
- Facilitate independence prior to prosthesis
- Enhance daily living skills
- Provide coping skills for patient and family
- Education on skin care and prosthesis usage
- Assists with prosthesis prescription and fit
- Desensitization of involved limb
- Pain control as needed
Prosthetic Program
- Instruction in proper prosthesis use for ambulation, transfers, and daily living
- Instruction in proper prosthesis donning and doffing
- Instruction in prosthesis use and maintenance
