Epilepsy Specialist at St. Charles Leads Medical Mission to Bolivia

David Anschel, MD, Director, Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of Long Island (CECLI) at St. Charles Hospital, was chosen as a visiting professor for the Partnering Epilepsy Centers in the Americas program sponsored by the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE).

Dr. Anschel visited Bolivia in August, 2010, to establish a partnership with an epilepsy center, share his expertise in the care of individuals with epilepsy and begin a comprehensive epilepsy center. Additional plans include a visit to medical schools, rounds with neurology residents, providing logistical expertise to local epilepsy centers, giving lectures and participating in a plenary session for regional epilepsy meetings. Following the visiting professorship, Dr. Anschel continued to collaborate with the epilepsy center through the telemedicine project which entailed monthly web conferences.

In 2007, Dr. Anschel founded the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of Long Island (CECLI) at St. Charles Hospital. CECLI is a fully functioning comprehensive program caring for individuals with epilepsy and its mimickers. The program utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to treating epilepsy and includes both surgical and non-surgical treatments. Dr. Anschel is board certified in neurology and clinical neurophysiology.

The International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) is the world's preeminent association of physicians and other health professionals working towards a world where no persons' life is limited by epilepsy. ILAE's mission is to ensure that health care professionals, patients and their care providers, governments, and the public world-wide have the educational and research resources that are essential in understanding, diagnosing and treating persons with epilepsy. The organization was founded on August 30, 1909, at a meeting in Budapest during the International Medical Congress. ILAE is the oldest such international sub-specialist organization in the field of neurology and one of the oldest in medicine.
